Wake County Senior Democrats –meeting of fellowship, discussion and Activism.

The GOP Legislative Attack on the Judiciary, a presentation by Judge Don Stephens.

Donald W. Stephens was appointed to the Special Superior Court in 1984 and was elected thereafter to that position until mandatory retirement in 2017 - a record 33 years. His other positions have included JAG Division of the US Marine Corps in the early 1970's and special deputy attorney general in the NC Department of Justice during the late 1970's. Judge Stephens grew up in Durham, has a degree from UNC-CH majoring in business administration and a JD degree from UNC Law School. 

NC Senior Dems -- Call for Outstanding Chapter Members

Tom Rothrock, President of NC Senior Democrats, needs to get nominations for your Outstanding Chapter member [1].  
He also seeks nominations for the State Senior Democrat of the Year. [2]

Board of Remembrance entries can be received right up to convention time.  You need a picture and a write up. These are posted on a display board that will be available during the convention. Convention goers can actually read about those persons who have died since the last state convention. [3]

The Free Beacon

'The Washington Free Beacon is an American conservative political journalism web site launched in 2012. It states it is "dedicated to uncovering the stories that the powers that be hope will never see the light of day" and producing "in-depth investigative reporting on a wide range of issues, including public policy, government affairs, international security, and media." '

Freedom Partners

from 2011, promotes free markets and free society. Partially funded by Koch Brothers. Operates as a chamber of commerce with some 200 members and annual member dues of $100,000. Revenue FY 2011 = $256 Million

Heritage Foundation

“The mission of The Heritage Foundation is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.”

Indiana Policy Review Foundation

The Indiana Policy Review Foundation (IPR) is a right-wing pressure group that is an affiliate of the State Policy Network web of such groups in 48 states. IPR states as its mission "to marshall [sic] the best thought on governmental, economic and educational issues at the state and municipal levels" through exalting "the truths of the Declaration of Independence, especially as they apply to the interrelated freedoms of religion, property and speech," emphasizing "primacy of the individual in addressing public concerns," and recognizing "that equality of opportunity is sacrificed in pursuit of equality of results."

Founded 1963, sponsors a website The Free Telegraph to promote issues from the perspective of Republicans. 34/50 governors are currently Republicans, including those of Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina.

Focuses in grassroots canvassing and phone banking in 2018 in one NC congressional district and a score of others across the country. Money goes to pay field organizers who recruit and train volunteers, not to TV ads. www.turnoutpac.org In 2016 32 House seats had a victory margin of less than 10% -- a few thousand votes. Winning them in 2018 would flip the House to Democratic.

A trifecta, in this context, means a state in which the governor, and legislature (usually 2 houses) are all held by the same party.

President Benson Kirkman called the meeting to order and welcomed new members and guests. New officers were introduced by President Kirkman and sworn in by Rebecca Llewellyn.

Vice President Willie Rowe introduced Rebecca Llewellyn, Chair, Wake County Democratic Party. Ms. Llewellyn informed us of county business.

NC Rep. Joe John spoke briefly.

New Business
Motion to donate $100 to support the Wake Co Democratic fundraiser was brought to the floor by Willie Rowe and seconded by John Yelvington. The motion was amended by Mike Rulison to make the amount $125. Amendment motion was approved. Benson Kirkman and Willie Rowe will represent WCSD.

NC Senior Democrats Convention is in Charlotte May 18-19. The location is the Holiday Inn Charlotte Airport.

We saluted the Flag of North Carolina and Benson adjourned the meeting.

Political Polarization & Media Habits is a longish site with several parts as prepared by BY AMY MITCHELL, JEFFREY GOTTFRIED, JOCELYN KILEY AND KATERINA EVA MATSA
It deals with the sources of news and political reporting as chosen by progressives and conservatives. Certainly worth a visit even though it dates from 2014.
It is also the source of the chart given out media by positioning along a Progressive - Conservative scale. 

Politifact

"PolitiFact is a nonpartisan fact-checking website to sort out the truth in American politics. PolitiFact was created by the Tampa Bay Times, a Florida newspaper, in 2007. In 2018, PolitiFact was acquired by the Poynter Institute, a nonprofit school for journalists.

What the Federal Budget & Tax Plan Means
for People in North Carolina by Luis Toledo

Luis Toledo is a Democratic candidate for State Senate in the newly-created District 16. Luis is currently a policy analyst at the NC Justice Center. He focuses on conducting non-partisan research on the federal and state budget and the role of public investments in communities. Prior to joining the Justice Center, Luis served as an Assistant State Audit Manager-Supervisor in the NC Office of the State Auditor where he lead various teams in conducting innovative government audits. His strategic work led to several public audit reports that identified major findings at state agencies and provided key recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly to help North Carolina. His work received an ‘Excellence in Accountability’ award by the National State Auditors Association. Prior to that, Luis served at the U.S. Department of State as a Presidential Management Fellow. During that time he worked on various global programs and issues related to national security and global hunger. Luis is a U.S. veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Luis earned a master’s in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, and a bachelor’s in Business Administration in cyber-security and international management from The University of Texas at San Antonio.

2018 Investing in Members

One of our first political investments should be toward the continued solvency of the Wake County Senior Democrats.

We ask for a minimum investment of $20.00 from each member. Paying by check makes accounting easier and more transparent. It is not tax deductible. And, of course, for those who can, larger contributions are gratefully received.

Members should know that we ask for money in order to help the Wake County Democratic Party and the NC Senior Democrats by our contributions. Examples include: Wake County Voter slate cards, get out the vote (GOTV) mailings in Wake County, and local focused meetings.
